ATPI ANNOUNCES ELECTION OF 2004 OFFICERS AND TRUSTEES

WASHINGTON, DC - The American Tax Policy Institute (ATPI) is pleased to announce the election of its Officers and Trustees for 2004. Continuing in office are Ronald A. Pearlman, President, Dr. Rudolph G. Penner, Vice President, and Elaine K. Church, Treasurer. Pearlman is a Professor of Law at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC and a former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Tax Policy and Chief of Staff of the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation. Penner is a Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute in Washington, DC and a former Director of the Congressional Budget Office. Church is a partner in the Washington, DC office of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Roger Wheeler will serve as the newly elected Secretary. Wheeler is Chief Tax Officer of the General Motors Corporation.

In addition, seven new Trustees have been elected. Three are academics: Dr. Charles E. McLure, Jr., Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury (Tax Analysis); Prof. Richard P. Weber, Associate Professor of Accounting at Michigan State University; and Prof. David A. Weisbach, Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School and former Associate Tax Legislative Counsel, Treasury Department. A fourth, Loretta C. Argrett, is a former member of the Howard University School of Law faculty and a former Assistant Attorney General, Tax Division, Department of Justice. The newly elected group of Trustees include three well-known tax practitioners: Herbert N. Beller, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, Washington, DC; Phillip L. Mann, Miller & Chevalier, Washington DC; and Irwin L.Treiger, Dorsey & Whitney, Seattle, WA. All three have served as Chair of the ABA Tax Section, and Mann also served as Tax Legislative Counsel, Treasury Department. ATPI’s new Trustees possess a broad range of academic expertise, private sector, and government experience.

Three individuals were re-elected for additional terms as ATPI Trustees: Dr. Henry J. Aaron, The Brookings Institution, Washington, DC; Stuart H. Offer, Morrison & Foerster, LLP, San Francisco, CA; and Bernard M. Shapiro, PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, Washington, DC.

The American Tax Policy Institute is dedicated to improving the Nation's tax system by supporting objective and nonpartisan research and analysis on tax policy issues.
